New Delhi, February 17: The Supreme Court on Monday directed the Centre to grant permanent commission to all women officers in the Army.
The court said permanent service commission would apply to all women officers in the Army irrespective of years of service.
After the 2010 judgment of the Delhi High Court, the government is bound to grant permanent commission to women officers in the Army.
A Bench headed by Justice DY Chandrachud said the induction of women in the Army is an evolutionary process.
It pulled up the Centre for thwarting the implementation of the High Court verdict.
The apex court said equality of opportunity to all citizens and gender justice should guide engagement of women in the Army. It rejected the stereotypes that only women are responsible for domestic duties.
To deny permanent commission on the basis of stereotypes represented deeply-entrenched biases, it said.
