Srinagar April 17: Jammu and Kashmir witnessed the fifth Covid-19 death on Friday after an elderly man from north Kashmir’s Baramulla district died at the Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) Medical College, Bemina.

The man, 72, from Arampora in Sopore died this afternoon. He was being treated for Covid-19 at the hospital since April 2.

“A man who was positive for the coronavirus died today at our hospital. He had co-morbodities of hypertension and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease,” said Dr Shefa Deva, Medical Superintendent, SKIMS Medical College.

Deva said the man was referred from Government Medical College, Baramulla, to SKIMS Medical College on April 2 and at the time of the admission was coronavirus positive.

“He was being managed in the high-dependency unit of our hospital. Unfortunately, he died today because of Covid-19 and other co-morbidities,” the Medical Superintendent said.

The deceased had a travel history to Saudi Arabia, doctors said.

Doctors said he was treated for chest infection in March at Chest Disease Hospital in Srinagar and found negative for the coronavirus.

“However, he developed coronavirus symptoms during home quarantine and was admitted to the GMC, Baramulla. His sample was sent for testing to SKIMS, Soura, where it was found positive for the coronavirus,” said the doctors treating the patient.

Of the five Covid deaths in Jammu and Kashmir, two dead are from Baramulla, one each from Srinagar, Bandipora, and Udhampur districts.

At least 314 persons have tested positive for the coronavirus, with 260 in the Kashmir division alone, government spokesperson Rohit Kansal said.
