DSEJ organizes webinar on Menatal Health, emphasis on suicide prevention among students

Jammu, June19: Directorate of School Education Jammu organised yet another webinar, a first of its kind on the topic ‘Emotional and Behavioural Issues in Children’ keeping in view the stress and anxiety generated due to COVID-19 lockdown, recently declared class 10th examination results, upcoming 12th class result declaration etc. among the students in particular and public in general.

Ms. Anuradha Gupta, Director School Education Jammu was the chief guest on the occasion whereas Dr. Deepa Mohan, consultant clinical psychologist and Associate Professor Applied Psychology at GIATM University was the key resource person of the webinar which laid special emphasis on Suicide Prevention. The webinar was also live-streamed on Facebook page on Counselling cell DSEJ and benefitted thousands of participants across various sections of the society and students.


Mrs. Anuradha Gupta, Director School Education Jammu said that it is painful to see suicide attempts among students. During this lockdown period, children are facing stress, anxiety and other such issues. “Parents must be in a position to assess the early warning signals and address the issues timely,” she said.

Prof.Arti Bakshi, Head, Deptt. Of Psychology, University of Jammu, being the Guest of Honour on the occasion appreciated the efforts of DSEJ for organising a webinar on such a current and relevant topic. She welcomed the panelists and the participants by announcing that the webinar was aimed at creating awareness among students, teachers and parents and helping them in dealing with various emotional and behavioural issues.

Dr. Deepa Mohan expressed her gratitude towards DSEJ for organising the webinar for students of J&K at such a crucial juncture when their results are getting declared and are facing a unique situation of lockdown. She discussed the problems being faced by the children, emotional disturbances, behavioural disturbances, identification of such children, specific warning signs about children having suicidal tendencies and role of school in suicide prevention.

Highlighting the suicide prevention strategy, she advised, “Decrease criticism, Increase Appreciation. Avoid comparison of child with peers or siblings and always appreciate the effort, not the result of the child.” She further suggested that the DSEJ should have atleast one counsellor in every school for the welfare and diagnosis of psychological problems of children.

The session was followed by Q&A session moderated by Head counselling cell, Mr.Romesh Kumar in which participants put up various questions to the key resource person. Even queries on Facebook were sddressed by Ms. Ravneet Kour, child and adolescent Psychologist at Nurture and Cherish, Delhi. She was also one of the pannelist for today’s webinar besides Shria Abrol, RCI certified counsellor at Jodhamal Public School and Divya Duheta, Life skills trainer, author and coach.

Team counselling cell DSEJ namely Alka Sharma, Counsellor Shanti saroop Sharma and Shveta Sharma contributed in the smooth conduct of this webinar.
