Jammu, January 24: Representing the UT of Ladakh for the first time in the third Khelo India Youth Games-2020 at Guwahati (Assam), Farhana Eliyas of Leh district has succeeded in bagging a bronze medal in the 69-kg category boxing contest on Wednesday.
Farhana has earlier won the Ladakh School Olympics Tournament.
After the first edition of the Ladakh School Olympics, a lot of sports infrastructure was created in the UT. Besides, a permanent boxing training centre was set up, which helped the local young boxers to prepare for the national-level competition.
Lieutenant-Governor of Ladakh RK Mathur congratulated Farhana Eliyas and said she was an inspiration to all budding boxers and sportspersons of the UT.
Meanwhile, Sachin Kumar, Deputy Commissioner, Leh Council, also congratulated Eliyas for her achievement and hailed the efforts put in by the entire team of the Youth Services and Sports Department of Ladakh.
“It’s a tremendous achievement and I congratulate Farhana Eliyas and the entire crew for the impressive performance. The local youth have tremendous potential to excel in sports and I sincerely hope that this is just the beginning of a new Ladakh,” the DC said.
