Jammu: Directorate of School Education Jammu, today, organised an interactive session on World Braille Day to sensitize the students, educators and other stake holders about the needs and possible ways to reach out to visually impaired children, through its Cultural & Education Cell.
Director School Education Jammu, Ms. Anuradha Gupta in her message emphasized that the COVID-19 pandemic and the ensuing lockdown had thrown up several new challenges for visually impaired children as they relied heavily on the use of ‘touch and hearing’ to communicate their needs and access information. So, it was only prudent to produce essential information in accessible formats, including Braille and audible formats. She assured that every possible step would be taken to meet the needs of specially abled children.
Ms. Anita Kumari, Special Educator, who was the guest speaker for the session, highlighted the importance of Braille as a medium of communication for people who are blind and visually impaired and said that Braille literacy was an important factor determining equal opportunities for people with blindness. She shared many tips for educators who are dealing with such children, based on her own experience in the field.
The programme was moderated by Alka Sharma and coordinated by Surjit Singh, Head Cultural and Education Cell DSEJ, Ashutosh Sharma and Sadakat Ali, members Cultural and Education Cell DSEJ.
