DSEJ observes World Suicide Prevention Day

Jammu: In order to create awareness about Suicide Prevention strategies, Directorate of School Education Jammu through its counselling Cell organized a Panel Discussion on “Ensuring Well-being Of Children In Schools” in which faculty counsellors viz. Anuradha Sharma , Rupinder Kour, Ruhi Kousar, Preeti Sharma and Shanti Saroop Sharma participated as panelists and highlighted various issues related to the topic.

The panelists highlighted the early warning signs, reasons for committing suicides, preventive measures and how to ensure well-being of children in schools. They shared their special experiences about dealing with children having emotional issues.

Sh. Romesh Sharma, Head counselling Cell, DSEJ, requested all the participants to follow simple counselling techniques like attending/observing, active listening, empathy and unconditional positive regard etc. to ensure emotional well- being of children in schools.

Director School Education Jammu, Dr. Ravi Shankar Sharma underlined the importance of well-being and counselling initiatives in view of COVID pandemic. He expressed his resolve to ensure well-being of children by following different strategies for their holistic development of mind, body and soul.

Besides this, faculty counsellors in schools organized several activities like essay writing, painting competitions, slogan writing, elocution, lectures on the theme etc. Videos and audios on suicide prevention were also shared by faculty counselors and students on different social media platforms.
The theme of weekly virtual programme by counselling cell “AAO baat Karein” was suicide prevention through creating hope. Senior faculty counsellor Manmohan Kour highlighted different strategies for suicide prevention.

World Suicide Prevention Day is observed every year on 10th of September to highlight various ways by which suicide can be prevented, to make people understand that suicide is a major preventable cause of premature death. The theme of 2021 creating hope through action focuses on a collective initiative towards suicide prevention.
