GURU RAVIDAS JAYANTI CELEBRATED WITH FERVOUR IN RECENTLY RE-OPENED SCHOOLS ACROSS DISTRICT KATHUA

Kathua,16 Feb, 2022: The recent re-opening of schools after the era of lockdowns and restrictions was welcomed all over the Union Territory and a positive vibe was seen everywhere specially among returning students.

Incidentally, the re-opening was also marked by the celebrations of Guru Ravidas Jayanti today.

Several schools of the district, despite it being a holiday, specially opened up to pay homage to the great spiritual guru and to celebrate his birth anniversary.

Though the celebrations were held with great enthusiasm, strict & due care of COVID SOPs & COVID appropriate behavior was observed in schools.


Several schools of the district organized various activities of which the ‘Doha Recitals’ & ‘Poster making’ were the highlights. Teachers & students spoke on the life of Guru Ravidas. The impact of learning the use of social media was also clearly visible as many of the participants shared their contributions virtually.


Mr. P.L. Thapa, CEO Kathua extended his wishes and congratulated the educationists & students of the District on the occasion. He also shared a quote ““The teachings of Guru never fail. His word never goes wrong. He is the true source of light.“ by Guru Ravidas & said that quote despite being quite simple worded, beautifully & amply explains the role & significance of a teacher.

He also emphasized that after a long gap, “We have got this opportunity to re-open the schools & bring the required alignment in academic practices. Therefore, as responsible & educated citizens should take utmost care in following COVID safe procedures & follow the issued guidelines so that we are able to keep the schools functioning & the students may not suffer any more”.


‘Guru Ravidas Jayanti’ is the birthday of Guru Ravidas, celebrated on Magh Purnima, the full moon day in the month of Magh. It is the annual focal point for the Ravidassia sect. People across the country specially in North celebrate this special occasion as a mark of respect to the great saint & one of the founders of Bhakti Movement. Also, the devotees take a dip in holy rivers as a mark of devotion to the guru.

Guru Ravidas is known as a spiritual man and also as a social reformer because of his work against casteism. He is also considered contemporary of saint Kabir.

Also, a mystic poet & well-known saint, he was a great social reformer who fought against the evil of casteism. He believed in unity & equality in humankind. He was a progressive thinker & believed that no human can be subjected to discrimination based on caste, religion or gender.
