Kathua: International Mother Language Day was celebrated with full fervor on 21st February 2022 in various schools of Kathua district. Many different activities were organized in different schools on this occasion. Many students and teachers participated in events such as speeches, skits, dramas, songs, poster making, article writing in local regional languages such as Dogri, Pahari and Gojri emphasizing on the cultural and historical importance of mother tongue. The teachers of the district also showed equal enthusiasm in the activities and performed along with the students.
In the calander issued by the Directorate of School Education, Jammu also, special emphasis was given on the celebration of the International Mother Tongue Day and connecting the school students with the local and other vernacular languages.
Mother tongue plays an important role in promoting our culture and intellectual heritage. Also, the mother tongue is the first informal and formal language that a child understands and interprets. Keeping these facts in mind, UNESCO celebrates International Mother Language Day every year on 21 February to promote cultural diversity and multilingualism and to preserve them in the world.
The day was declared by UNESCO to be Mother Language Day on 17 November 1999 and for the first time in the year 2000, 21 February was declared as International Mother Language Day.
The theme of International Mother Language Day 2022 was “Use of Technology for Multilingual Education, Challenges and Opportunities”.
The Chief Education Officer of Kathua, Mr. P.L. Thapa appreciated all the celebrations and activities held in the schools and said that as language is the medium to express our thoughts, it is our main duty to protect the native languages.
He also extended his best wishes to all the teachers and students emphasizing on undertaking similar activities in future and making sure of maximum participation.
