Three labourers drown while cleaning a sewage treatment plant in Loni, Ghaziabad, on Sunday. The death was allegedly caused by poisonous gas in the plant.
Police said pump operator Mahesh Kasana, 28, a resident of Baghpat, entered into the 40- feet deep tank to clean garbage and when he did not come out, the other worker Roshan Lal, 33, a resident of Saharanpur, went inside but he also got stuck.
The third person, yet to be identified, also went down to rescue them, said police, adding that he also died.
After being informed by the local residents about the incident, police, along with National Disaster Response Force, (NDRF) rushed to the spot and took out the bodies.
District Magistrate Ritu Maheswar ordered an enquiry into the incident. Contractor Rakesh Chauhan was held responsible by officials for the tragedy and a complaint was filed against him in Loni Police Station, said officials.
The sewage treatment plant was installed by Uttar Pradesh Jal Nigam.
The District Magistrate announced a compensation of Rs 30,000 each to the victims’ family members, said officials.
