Army veteran Lt General Syed Ata Hasnain (retd) has been named chancellor of the Central University of Kashmir.
According to a notification issued by the registrar of the varsity, Lt Gen Hasnain has been appointed as the chancellor for five-year term.
Hasnain will replace founding chancellor and nuclear scientist Srikumar Banerjee. Hasnain is a highly decorated retired general of the Indian Army.
“The President of India in his capacity as the Visitor of the Central University of Kashmir has been pleased to appoint Lt. Gen. Syed Ata Hasnain, Former Military Secretary, Indian Army as the Chancellor of the University,” the statement sent from Registrar’s office read.
Earlier, Lt. Gen. Hasnain’s name was doing rounds as the next governor of the state.
He has also commanded an Army Corps in Jammu and Kashmir and is said to have been a member of track 2 diplomacy initiatives with Pakistan.
He is also associated with the think tanks Vivekananda International Foundation and Delhi Policy Group.
