JAMMU: On Monday, this week, the Supreme Court of India took up the infamous Kathua rape and murder case of an 8 year old nomadic girl from the village of Rasana. Supreme Court ordered that the case should be transferred out of kathua to Punjab because the victim’s family feared for their life and a fair trial would not have been possible under such circumstances. Even the Kathua BAR lawyers had protested in favour of the accused and stopped the crime branch team of J&K Police from submitting the charge sheet in the Kathua court. While national and international outrage on the case brought a new rape law in the nation favouring death penalty to rapists where the age of the victim is less than 12 years,through an ordinance, an atmosphere was built in the Jammu region on the premise that it was all a conspiracy against the accused. Right wing activists and politicians put the blame on Pakistan, ISI, Huriyat conference and everyone else but the accused in the case. The investigation in the case was being monitored by the High Court, yet the crime branch was accused of framing the culprits.
A Hindu Ekta Manch was formed in favour of the rape accused and rallies were taken out in favour of the rape accused in Jammu region. Friendly media houses also contributed their bit in an attempt to build a case for the accused. Protests in favour of rape accused holding the tricolour national flag earned a lot of flak for Bjp on social media across the nation and prime minister was forced to make a statement on the issue denouncing such protests as a shame.
These protests were supported by two BJP ministers and Lal Singh was one of them who had to resign from his post of forest miniter on the issue. This doesn’t seem to have dampened his spirits and he continues to lead protests. After doing a Biplab Deb and inventing the ‘truth machine’ in katra a day earlier, he is at it again. On the day when Supreme Court decided to shift the case not only from Kathua but from the state of J&K itself, Lal Singh gets miffed on being asked about his association with Hindu Ekta Manch in an interaction with the media during one such rally and questions the reporter about his religion. He does not stop there, but asks the reporter what his problem was with Hindu Ekta Manch even when he was a Hindu too. He further links the Kathua rape case to the pride of Jammu. Lal singh has been holding protest rallies in Katra region of Jammu for the last few days and demanding CBI inquiry in the case . Supreme court has already said no to a CBI inquiry in the case.
Lal Singh is not new to controversy and during his stint as a health minister too he earned a lot of infamy for misbehaving with doctors.
