Police in Tiruvannamalai have arrested three men who allegedly tried to gang-rape a young Russian woman who was visiting the town, located in northern Tamil Nadu.

The men who were taken into custody include the owner of the private guest house where the woman, 21, was staying.

She arrived in Tiruvannamalai, home to a well-known Shiva temple, last Thursday. She didn’t leave her room in the guest house after Sunday. The police, who were tipped off by neighbours, found her inside the next day. She was unconscious.

She was taken to a government hospital, where she regained consciousness. Samples of her blood were sent to Chennai for investigation, and a Russian translator was hired to record her statement.

In April this year, a 33-year-old Latvian woman, Liga Skromane, was murdered in Kerala after an alleged sexual assault attempt.
