A Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) delegation led by its president Sukhbir Singh Badal will meet Punjab Governor and UT Administrator VP Singh Badnore soon and urge him to revoke the notification making it mandatory for Sikh women to wear helmets in the union territory.
A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of the Istri Akali Dal after its president Bibi Jagir Kaur made a forceful appeal to safeguard Sikh rehat maryada and principles. It was decided if need be the SAD would also approach Union home minister Rajnath Singh in this regard.
Earlier during the meeting of the Istri Akali Dal its president Bibi Jagir Kaur made an impassioned appeal for revoking the notification on helmets passed by the UT administration saying the issue was one of respecting the identity of Sikh women. She said even the courts had exempted Sikhs from wearing helmets and Sikh women should be seen as one with their counterparts and not separate from them.
The SAD president said the party would take up this issue at all levels as it concerned the sentiments of the Sikh community. He also asked the Istri Akali Dal wing to complete its organizational structure by August 15 besides asking the wing to appoint one Coordinator in every district.
Bibi Jagir Kaur also disclosed that the wing was going in for a number of activities including spreading awareness about centrally sponsored schemes so that maximum people could take advantage of them. She also disclosed that the wing would start an afforestration drive besides a drive against drugs menace.
