In a joint initiative, the Ludhiana Income Tax department and Ferozepur division of the Indian Railways inaugurated a vertical garden at Ludhiana railway station.

Ludhiana has now become the first railway station of the country to get a vertical garden. The verticle garden at Ludhiana junction is made by using waste plastic bottles.

The vertical garden was inaugurated by chief commissioner of Income Tax (CCIT-Ludhiana) Binay K Jha and divisional railway manager (DRM), Vivek Kumar on the occasion of Income Tax Day on Tuesday. The platform number 1 of the Ludhiana station now has different varieties of plants installed in more than 2,000 waste plastic bottles.

“The vertical garden at the railway station is a very special project for us, as exactly a year ago on the occasion of Income Tax Day 2017, we had launched a green plastic campaign from our office at Rishi Nagar by starting the work of making the first vertical garden using waste plastic bottles. Ever since that day, there has been no looking back.

Now, Ludhiana railway station has become the first railway station in the country to get a verticle garden,” Jha was quoted as saying. The installation of verticle garden managed to stop people from spitting pan masala and gutkha on the platform walls, the railway authorities noted. Additional commissioner (I-T) Rohit Mehra was the driving forces behind the verticle garden.

“This is a wonderful project, and we are thankful to IT officials for their suggestion and endeavour to make it possible on Ludhiana railway station, the first station in the country to get this garden. We will also replicate this project in other stations and sites to spread greenery as far as possible,” Vivek Kumar, DRM Ferozepur, said.

Several initiatives have been taken across Punjab under the green plastic project. Different types of plants have been installed in 2.50 lakh of waste plastic bottles in different parts of the state. The IT department also flagged off a free e-rickshaw service that will ferry income tax assessees from Civil Secretariat to its Rishi Nagar office.
