Independent legislator and Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) chairman Er Rasheed was detained on Thursday as police foiled his solidarity march for the Muslims of Jammu region.

An eye witness said that scores of AIP workers led by Rasheed took out a march from Sher-e-Kashmir Park to Press Enclave in capital Srinagar in solidarity with Muslims of Jammu region which, they claimed, were feeling unsafe.

Calling the killing of Murfad Shah as a pre-planned murder, the protesters demanded safety for the Muslims of Jammu region.

Shah was shot dead by CRPF guards at the residence of Farooq Abdullah last week. The family members of Shah have been demanding registration of FIR against the CRPF men.

They said the protest march was also staged to support Article 35-A and Article 370.

As the protesters reached Press Enclave, policemen swung into action and detained Rasheed along with his workers to foil the march.
