Eight outsiders were caught from Panjab University hostels in the wee hours on Saturday.
In view of the upcoming student union council elections at the PU and its affiliated colleges, a search operation was conducted, under the supervision of DSP/Central, to avoid any untoward incident on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday.
According to the police, a checking was conducted on the campus from 3 am to 6.30 am and a total of six hostels were checked. The hostel wardens remained with the police teams during checking.
The police said eight outsiders were detained from hostels and wardens gave in writing that there has been no guest entry for eight of them. A preventive action has been taken against them and they were produced before a local court. Checking operation concluded peacefully.
Prof Ashwani Koul, Chief of University Security, said: “Around 10-12 students were apprehended who couldn’t produce any identification document from the PU. We don’t recommend any action against them but these raids are a deterrent to such activities at this time.”
Every year during the election season, these raids are conducted and a number of outsiders are caught. The police said they will be stricter with outsiders this time
