Mirwaiz under house arrest ahead of Kashmir civic polls

Srinagar, Oct 7 2018: Hurriyat (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was put under house arrest on the eve of Jammu and Kashmir civic polls, a move he termed as “mockery of democracy”.

Taking to Twitter, Mirwaiz wrote: “Under #HouseArrest!Peculiar”Democratic”process of elections“gearing up “as huge deployment of forces,PSAs, incarcerations,house arrests,raids Curbs,internet bans gather momentum! Not to mention the unknown contestants and amused public ! What mockery of democracy is at display!”

Jammu and Kashmir is going to vote for civic polls in first phase tomorrow.

The polls are scheduled to begin on October 8, followed by the second phase on October 10, third phase on October 13 and last phase on October 16.

The counting of votes will be done on October 20.

Joint Resistance Leadership comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik has called for a boycott of the polls.
