2 killed, 60 injured as bus overturns near Karnal

Two persons were killed and nearly 60 others were injured after a Haryana Roadways bus overturned near Mainmati village on the Kunjpura road in the district on Friday evening.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Surinder Singh Bhoria said the deceased had been identified as Shyam Murari (58), a resident of Gheer, and Nirmala (55), a resident of Garhibirbal village.

When the accident took place around 6.15 pm, the bus was on its way to Garhibirbal from Karnal and was carrying more than 70 passengers. Scores of ITI students were among the passengers.

Eyewitnesses said when the bus reached near Mainmati village, a motorcycle came in front of the bus and to save the motorcyclist, the driver lost control over the vehicle and it overturned after hitting a tree.

Police personnel from Kunjpura police station, passersby and residents of neighbouring villages rushed to the spot and started rescue operation. More than 10 ambulances took the injured to Kalpana Chawla Government Medical College and other private hospitals.

Minister of State for Food and Civil Supplies Karan Dev Kamboj and former minister Bhimsen Mehta reached the Kalpana Chawla hospital and enquired about the injured.

Sources said five or six persons were seriously injured while the others were out of danger.

“Our priority is to save the lives of the injured and all doctors and staff of KCGMCH are doing their best,” said Kamboj.
