Srinagar, Oct 26: Restrictions have been imposed in downtown Srinagar as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order following call by Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) to hold protests after Friday prayers in the Kashmir valley against Kulgam incident on Sunday.
All gates of historic Jamia Masjid, stronghold of chairman of moderate Hurriyat Conference (HC), have again been closed and a large number of paramilitary forces and state police personnel deployed to strictly implement restrictions.
Police said restrictions have been imposed in areas falling under the jurisdiction of Nowhatta, M R Gunj, Khanyar, Rainawari and Safa Kadal besides some areas of police station Maisuma in the civil lines and Kralkhud in old city.
Large number of state police and CRPF personnel, wearing bulletproof jackets, leg-guards and holding automatic weapons, were seen guarding the streets and implementing restrictions in the downtown. One side of the main Nallahmar road has been closed at some places with barbed wire. However, people could be seen moving, though all shops and business establishments remained closed and passenger traffic off the road. Work in government offices, banks and other institutions was affected. Educational institutions remained closed in the restricted areas.
All roads leading to Jamia Masjid have been closed at Rangar stop, Nowhatta, Gojwara. Vehicles coming from outskirts were being directed to take Kathidrwaza road from Hawal to reach civil lines. The Jamia market also remained closed and security forces have been deployed to prevent anybody from entering the worship place.
