New Delhi, October 26: The Central government on Friday welcomed the Supreme Court order in the CBI case as a positive step saying the court had acknowledged the need for a time-bound and monitored probe into the matter.
“There was a dispute. This was that the CBI chief had one view and his deputy had another view about corruption allegations against each other. When an anti-corruption agency has such a situation we need a thorough inquiry to establish the truth which is in national interest. The CVC has the right of supervision in corruption matters of the CBI and said the officers should go on leave pending its probe,” Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said.
He said the Supreme Court on Friday further strengthened this thought of the CVC that an independent probe was necessary to reach the truth.
“The Supreme Court has accepted that the CVC inquiry should be concluded in two weeks and monitored by a retired judge for the truth to be revealed. This is in national interest. India can’t afford its graft probe agency to be under suspicion,” Jaitley said.
“Caesar’s wife should be above suspicion,” he said, welcoming the apex court judgment in the petitions by CBI chief Alok Verma and deputy Rakesh Asthana.
Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh had earlier said that the Congress had abandoned people’s issues and wanted to make political capital out of non-issues. “The matter is before the top court and we should all wait for the outcome,” Singh had said.
