Ambala: A suspected case of honour killing has come to light in the district. The 18-year-old victim’s maternal uncle has alleged that the deceased’s father murdered her and cremated the body on Thursday.
A police team has recovered samples of bones and ash from the pyre. The deceased was identified as Manpreet Kaur of Jansui village of Naggal area of Ambala. She was allegedly strangulated to death.
The matter came to light after the maternal uncle of the victim informed the police on Thursday night.
The girl’s father has been identified as Nihal Chand. He was arrested and produced in court today that sent him to one-day police remand.
In his complaint to the police, her maternal uncle Ramdas, a resident of Kurukshetra, said that from November 6 to 20, she stayed at his house in Baithala village of Kurukshetra. On November 21, Nihal Chand took her back home.
On November 22, he got a call around 4 am that Manpreet had died. He reached the village around 8 am and was told that the cremation had been done around 5 am.
“On suspicion, I talked to my sister and sister-in-law about the death of Manpreet and even they raised suspicion over the death. Then, I talked to Nihal Chand who said that he had no other choice as Manpreet had brought him a bad name,” he said.
Nihal was reportedly alone with his daughter in the house at the time of the incident.
SHO Naggal police station Rajeev said, “A case has been registered under Sections 302 and 34 of the IPC at Naggal police station. The accused has been sent to one-day police remand.”
DSP Headquarters Sultan Singh said, “The accused has claimed that the girl brought him a bad name following which he strangulated her. More details will be gathered during the remand.”
The forensic team had collected some remains and bones from the funeral pyre and sent those to the forensic laboratory, said the DSP.
