Ambala: A 45-year-old jeweller was shot dead while his helper sustained a bullet injury after miscreants opened fire at them at Sarafa Bazaar in Ambala City here late this evening.

The deceased has been identified as Sunil Jain (45), a resident of Ambala City, while the injured has been identified as Bharat Bhushan.
Sources said five miscreants, carrying arms, entered the shop with the motive of loot. The jeweller and his helpers resisted them after which they opened fire and fled from the spot.

The injured were taken to Civil Hospital, Ambala City, where Sunil Jain was declared brought dead. His helper was referred to the PGI, Chandigarh.

Sunil sustained three bullet injuries, one each in the chest, neck and stomach, while Bharat sustained a bullet injury on his thigh.

Sunil is survived by his wife and two daughters.

After the incident, jewellers gathered at the spot and held a protest. They alleged that the law and order situation was deteriorating. They raised slogans against the police and served an ultimatum of 24 hours on them to nab the killers failing which, they said, they would intensify their protest.

Naresh Aggarwal, president of the Ambala Sarafa Association, said resentment prevailed among jewellers and it had been decided to keep shops closed from tomorrow to mark their protest. “If the killers are not arrested, we will stage a dharna outside the SP’s residence,” he said.

They also raised slogans at the Civil Hospital. They alleged that they had repeatedly requested for arms licences for their protection, but in vain. They alleged that the police reached the spot late.

MLA Aseem Goel reached the spot and managed to persuade the jewellers to end their protest. He assured them that all jewellers who had applied for arms licence would get it soon.

The police are scrutinising CCTV footage to get a clue. Superintendent of Police Aastha Modi said, “There were four or five miscreants. The matter is being investigated and teams have been constituted to nab the killers.”
