Taxi crashes into Parliament entrance barricade, sparks security scare

A private taxi sparked a brief security scare at Parliament this morning after the vehicle crashed into the entrance barrier of Sansad Bhavan.

An instant alert was sounded among the security forces that guard Parliament and a Quick Response Team (QRT) of the Central Reserve Police Force immediately blocked the entrance route.

A video shot during the time shows a white QRT van parked alongside the width of the Parliament’s entrance road. A CRPF jawan is seen crouching behind the QRT van and taking aim at the entrance over the car’s bonnet.

However, it soon turned out that the white-coloured taxi that had hit the entrance barrier was actually a ferry for Members of Parliament. And so, the alert was cancelled and the QRT van withdrew from its position.

The Parliament House or Sansad Bhavan, located off Rajpath and near Rashtrapati Bhavan, is one of the most heavily protected buildings in the national capital.

The Parliament House came under an audacious attack in 2001 when five terrorists carrying AK-47 automatic rifles stormed the complex. A total of nine people were killed before all the five terrorists were shot dead by security forces.

The 17th anniversary of the 2001 Parliament attack was marked just last week on December 13.
