Bathinda: The CIA staff-2 claimed to have arrested four persons in connection with a carjacking case here on Monday. The police also recovered a car from their possession.

According to the police, the accused had taken away a Swift Dzire car from a Patiala resident on the Malout road near a dhaba on Thursday night.

The accused have been identified as Harbhej Singh, his brother Angrej Singh, their relatives Jashanpreet Singh and Navdeep Singh. The police have also recovered a toy pistol that was used in the crime.

The accused were produced in a local court, which sent them to police remand till December 19.

Addressing mediapersons, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Dr Nanak Singh said Harbehj was a friend of Atinderpal, who was the car owner.

“Atinderpal had borrowed Rs 1.75 lakh from Harbhej and the former was not ready to pay the money. Thereafter, the accused hatched a plan to recover his money. Harbhej involved his brother and two relatives to execute the plan to steal the car. To avoid any suspicion, he was accompanying Atinderpal to the police station to record statements. Thereafter, he suddenly disappeared. When the police questioned Harbhej, he admitted that he had committed the crime,” said the SSP.

He said different teams were formed to crack the case. According to information, the accused had planned to sell the stolen car to recover the money owned by the victim.

ASI Harinder Singh, who investigated the case, said, “Harbhej visited the Thermal police station with Atinderpal so that no one can doubt him. When we firmly interrogated the accused, he acknowledged his involvement in the crime.”
