Zirakpur, January 2: Two brothers were crushed to death, while one of their relatives sustained injuries after they were allegedly hit by a speeding Himachal Roadways bus near the Zirakpur flyover on the Ambala-Chandigarh highway here late last night.
The deceased have been identified as Sandeep (29) and his brother Kuldeep (24), while the injured is Arvind Singh (21), all residents of Jarnail Enclave, Zirakpur. Arvind was admitted to the GMCH, Sector 32, Chandigarh, where he is under treatment, said the police.
The police said the deceased’s father, Satiya Singh, who retired from the Haryana Fisheries Department, in his complaint to the police, said he had four children, including three sons. He said two of his sons, Sandeep and Kuldeep, and his brother-in-law son Arvind had gone to their workplace on January 1. The complainant said the trio returned from their workplace around 1.45 am and wanted him to get them picked up from near the bus stop.
The complainant said he, along with his third son, Pardeep, on separate vehicles, had gone to pick up Sandeep, Kuldeep and Arvind Singh from Zirakpur. He said when the trio was waiting near the highway, a speeding bus, bearing an HP number, came from the Dera Bassi side and reportedly hit them and then hit their bike.
The police said passersby rushed the injured to the GMCH, Sector 32, where doctors declared Sandeep and Kuldeep dead. Arvind sustained injuries and was admitted to the hospital.
The driver of the bus, Rakesh Kumar, fled from the spot.
The police have registered a case against the bus driver at the Zirakpur police station.
Couldn’t get through to police: Eyewitness
An eyewitness said when he called up the Police Control Room at 100, the number was reportedly not reachable. He said he tried nearly 10 times, but each time he could not get through. He lamented that in case of an emergency on the Chandigarh-Ambala highway, where fatal accidents take place almost everyday, those in distress often found it difficult to get through to the police. A person had the telephone number of an ASI posted at Zirakpur and it was by calling him up that help arrived, said another eyewitness.
