Dera Bassi, January 3: High drama was witnessed at the Mubarikpur police chowki here this morning when family members of a two-year-old male child, who died under mysterious circumstances, alleged medical negligence on the part of the doctor.

Dr Sanjeev Gupta, who runs a nursing home at Mubarikpur, denied having administered a wrong injection. He said it was a perinorm injection and there was nothing wrong in it. He said the child’s mother had asked him to give temporary treatment to her two-year-old child, who was vomiting and suffering from loose motions.

The body of Rajbir was taken by his family members to the police chowki where other migrant labourers too joined them. While the family members alleged negligence on the part of the doctor for the death of Rajbir, Dr Sanjeev Gupta cited septicaemia as the cause of the death.

The police said Barinder, grandfather of the child, who works at a brick-klin near Pandwala village, told the police that on January 1, Rajbir suffered burn injuries on both his legs after a utensil filled with hot tea accidentally fell on him while he was playing. He said they applied some ointment as advised by someone.

The complainant said on January 3 morning, Rajbir started vomiting and his mother, Rulam Devi, took him to Gupta Nursing Home in Mubarikpur. He said the doctor, after administering an injection, told them to go the GMCH, Sector 32, Chandigarh, or the Civil Hospital, Dera Bassi, for further treatment. He alleged that when they took Rajbir to the Civil Hospital, doctors declared him brought dead on arrival.

Dr Sanjeev Gupta told the police that the child was already suffering from septicaemia when he was brought to the clinic and claimed that he began to have trouble in breathing after which he asked them to take him to the GMCH.

He said the family agreed to take Rajbir, but the child’s mother asked him to provide temporary treatment and therefore he administered an injection for vomiting.

The police said after much hue and cry, the child’s family members decided not to lodge any written complaint. The police took the body for a postmortem at the Civil Hospital, Dera Bassi.

Kulwant Singh, in-charge of the Mubarikpur police chowki, said they had initiated inquest proceedings into the matter and the next course of action would be decided on the basis of the postmortem report.
