PGIMER in collaboration with Tata Memorial Centre Mumbai , world NCD federation and Health Department, UT Chandigarh and Department of Health and Family Welfare, Punjab is organizing National CME on cancer registries for cancer control on 23rdJanuary 2019 at Bhargava Auditorium, PGIMER Chandigarh. Cancer is one of the most dreadful diseases of the world and one of the leading cause of disease and death. According to WHO, the global cancer burden is estimated to have risen to 18.1 million new cases and 9.6 million deaths in 2018. One in 5 men and one in 6 women worldwide develop cancer during their lifetime, and one in 8 men and one in 11 women die from the disease. Worldwide, the total number of people who are alive within 5 years of a cancer diagnosis, are estimated to be 43.8 million.
In India, Cancer is on the rise and the estimated number of people living with cancer are estimated to be 22.6 Lakhs. In 2018, the number of new cancer cases were 11.6 Lakhs and 7.8 Lakhs death occurred due to cancer. The risk of dying due to cancer before age 75yrs is 7.34 % in males and 6.28% in females. Cancers of oral cavity and lungs account for over 25% of cancer deaths in males and cancer of breast and oral cavity account for 25% cancers in females. Although, Breast cancer is the most common cancer in India today but cervical cancer is still prevalent..
The CME will highlight upon population based cancer registries(PBCR) as a tool for cancer control for improving the programme and policies. PBCR in Chandigarh and Punjab were established on 1 January 2013, with collaboration of PGIMER ,Chandigarh, TMC, Mumbai, Govt. of Punjab and Chandigarh Administration with a vision to establish baseline data to assess the burden , pattern and trend of cancer. They have completed five successful years. PBCR at Chandigarh and SAS Nagar are predominantly urban, whereas Sangrur and Mansa are predominantly rural PBCR. In PBCR Chandigarh, incidence of cancer was found to be higher than national average( Males: 96.1 India :92.4 Females-104.7 India: 97.4 per 100,000). In Punjab, SAS Nagar had higher incidence of cancer than national figure. Breast cancer was leading cancer in Chandigarh, SAS, Nagar and Sangrur. Oesophageal cancer was predominant cancer in Sangrur and Mansa PBCR. Lung cancer and Prostate cancer were predominant cancer in urban male population.
The programme will be inaugurated by Honourable Health Minister of Himachal Pradesh Mr Vipin Parmar in the presence of Prof Jagat Ram , Director PGIMER , Mr Amit Kumar, Mission Director, National Health Mission, Punjab, Dr Jaspal Kaur, DHS Punjab, Prof Raj Bahadur, Vice chancellor Baba Farid university of Health sciences, Dr Rajesh Dikshit, Director Centre of Epidemiology, TMC Mumbai, Mr Arun Kumar, Health Secretary , UT Chandigarh and Dr G Dewan, DHS Chandigarh has also been invited to grace the occasion.
The programme will commence with a session on establishment of cancer registries chaired by Dr Ravi Mehrotra, ICMR, Prof JS Thakur and Sandhya Ghai. The session will highlight on cancer burden , data sources and global practices in data utilization for cancer control by Dr S Kathirvel, cancer burden in Chandigarh and Punjab by Dr Atul Budukh TMC, Mumbai. Cancer registries will be covered by Dr Rajesh Dikshit, TMC followed by screening , diagnosis and management in gastrointestinal cancers such as colorectal cancers by Prof Cervical cancer prevention by Prof Vanita Suri, PGI, breast cancer by Prof Gurpreet Singh, lung cancers by Prof Navneet Singh and blood cancers by Prof Pankaj Malhotra, PGI. Third session will start with Purpose and uses of cancer registries, Cancer Control under NPCDCS by Dr Sudhir Gupta, Addl DDG, NCD, MOHFW, Multi disease screening by Prof Anurag Srivastava, AIIMS. Prof. JS Thakur, PGI will present Chandigarh Non Communicable Disease (NCD) registry which is the the first integrated NCD registry in India.
A panel discussion with eminent panellist has also been arranged for the strengthening of the cancer registration for cancer control in India. The strengthening of the cancer registries is only possible with alignment of all the stakeholders i.e government, private sector, medical community and NGO’s. Hence a common platform with eminent panellist has been created with Prof. Raj Bahadur, Dr Gopal Chauhan, Dr Manju Behl, Dr Sudhir Gupta,Dr Varinder Garg, Prof Ajay Duseja,Dr Usha Singh, Dr Santosh Kumar, Dr Pankaj Arora, Dr Deepak Bansal, Dr Tapan Dutta, Dr Rakesh Kapoor, Dr Rekha Singh, Dr GB Singh -State Programme Officers, NPCDCS, NGOs. In the end, there will be a a public forum for the cancer survivors and general public for question and answers pertaining to cancer prevention, control, management and myths. The public forum will be moderated by Prof Pankaj Malhotra, PGI and will be joined Dr Pankaj Arora, Dr GB Singh, Dr Gaurav Prakash, Dr Atul Budukh, Dr Gurpreet Singh and Dr Bhawna.The CME is accredited with the Punjab medical Council for 4 hours.
The National CME will help bring consensus how cancer registries can contribute to cancer control in the country. It will also help to find solutions to challenges faced during process and bring all stakeholders to a common platform to use cancer registries for cancer control activities. It will also provide an opportunity for the medical personnel working in the public and private sector for improving knowledge and orientation on screening, diagnosis and management of common cancers. It will also help spread awareness on the importance of early diagnosis and treatment to prevent complication and better quality of life among general public.
