State bags 4 awards under ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’

The Central government has given a state-level and three district-level awards to Haryana for outstanding work under the national programme, ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’.

Union Minister of Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi presented the state-level awards to five states, including Haryana, at a function organised on National Girl Child Day, in New Delhi, on Thursday. The 25 districts which have been awarded included three districts of Haryana, namely Jhajjar, Karnal and Kurukshetra.Haryana Women and Child Development Minister Kavita Jain received the state-level award given in the category, ‘Overall support, guidance, monitoring and achieving the targets of Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’.

Jain said Jhajjar had been awarded in the category, ‘Enabling girl child education’, and Kurukshetra was awarded in the category, ‘Enforcement of Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act’. Similarly, Karnal was awarded in the category, ‘Effective community engagement’. The awards to Jhajjar, Karnal and Kurukshetra were received by Deputy Commissioners Sonal Goel, Aditya Dahiya and SS Phulia, respectively.

Karnal improves sex ratio

Karnal: Karnal district has secured second rank in sex ratio with 934 girls after 1,000 boys in 2018 in the state after Sirsa, which is at the top with 935.

Haryana’s sex ratio has improved by 68 points in the past four years. It was 846 in the end of 2014 and in 2018, it was 914.

In 2010, Karnal’s sex ratio was 834, 847 in 2011, 849 in 2012, 880 in 2013, 886 in 2014, 897 in 2015, 909 in 2016 and 922 in 2017. It was among 20 districts of the country with low sex ratio around three years back.

In 2010, the then Deputy Commissioner Neelam Pardeep Kasni had initiated a campaign to making people pledge to stop female foeticide on every sixth of the month.

As per the Civil Registration System of 2018, 5,24,783 children were born in 2018 across Haryana. Out of these, 2,74,245 are male and 2,50,538 are female.

With 927 sex ratio, Jind district is at third place. Sonepat and Yamunanagar districts are jointly at fourth place with 925.

Karnal authorities claim that they have initiated several steps like bursting the inter-state sex determination racket and unearthing gangs involved in selling MTP kits for illegal abortion.

Dr Rajinder Kumar, Deputy Civil Surgeon, said that it was the highest sex ratio of the district since 2010.

“We have been conducting raids to nab inter-state and inter-district sex determination rackets. We have got 31 FIRs of PCPNDT Act and 23 of MTP Act registered so far,” said Dr Rajesh Goria, Deputy Civil Surgeon.
