Panchkula, January 30: Two persons were injured, one of them seriously, when a group of gamblers allegedly opened fire on some persons on the first floor of a showroom in Sector 20 here this evening.

Both injured were rushed to the Civil Hospital in Sector 6 from where one of the injured, who reportedly received a gunshot on his head, was referred to the PGI where his condition is stated to be serious. The injured admitted to the Civil Hospital has been identified as Sunny, while the identity of the victim admitted to the PGI is not known as he was unconscious.

Sector 20 SHO Ajay Disodia said seven or eight youths were gambling on the first floor of the showroom. He said prima facie it appeared that there were heated exchanges between the two groups over the distribution of money and one of the groups opened fire on the other group. He said the one who was seriously injured was lying unconscious and cards were scattered on the table as well as the floor. He said Sunny had jumped from the first floor after breaking the glass of the window. He suffered fractures on his legs and arms, besides receiving head injuries as he fell on the debris lying in front of the showroom. He said the unidentified attackers fled from the spot immediately after the incident.

Ajay said forensic experts suspected that the attackers were also gamblers as playing cards were scattered all over the room. He said during a search of the room, they found shells of 9 mm bullets fired from a pistol. He said the seriously injured youth had injuries on his forehead and it was unclear if it was due to a bullet injury or his head had hit some sharp object.

One of the eyewitnesses said he, along with others, was heading towards his car when he heard gunshots and saw a person jumping from the first floor of the showroom. He said the victim was crying for help to save the lives of his friends as shots were being fired. He said he informed the police, who reached the spot.

The SHO said the victim referred to the PGI was unconscious, while Sunny, who was admitted to the Civil Hospital, had been declared unfit by doctors to make a statement.

He said a case had been registered against the unidentified miscreants and they were trying to get CCTV footage from nearby areas to get a clue as there was no CCTV camera in and around the showroom.
