New Delhi, February 4: Political greenhorn and Congress spokesperson Jaiveer Shergill on Monday threw his hat in the ring for the Lok Sabha ticket from Anandpur Saheb constituency of Punjab.
Shergill, 35, has no past electoral experience and entered the Congress only in 2011, after party president Rahul Gandhi spotted him national talent hunt for spokespersons.
Shergill was born and brought up in Jalandhar and went on to take his law degrees from Kolkata and London.
He’s a practising lawyer and was earlier co-convenor is AICC legal cell.
Shergill is eyeing a key seat where Congress veteran Ambika Soni holds sway having invested a lot of funds when she was Minister for Culture in UPA regime.
Ambika had, however, unsuccessfully contested from Anandpur Sahib segment in the 2014 LS polls when then sitting Congress MP from the area Ravneet Bittu asked to be shifted to Ludhiana.
Reports are that Soni’s son may also be interested in the seat though it’s not clear if he will formally apply.
Shergill told media that he wanted to take Gandhi’s vision of new India forward.
“Rahul Gandhi has always encouraged youngsters from non political families to contest elections and so I have applied from Anandpur Sahib,” Shergill said.
An active debater, Shergill has participated in 140 national debates to defend the Congress.
He was recently appointed media coordinator for Congress in Chhattisgarh where the party won big.
