Chandigarh: To reduce pollution caused by the increasing number of vehicles in the city, the UT Administration has decided to introduce electric buses in the city.
Sources said Chandigarh City Bus Service Society had floated tenders for 40 buses, which would be run on kilometer basis. The buses would be introduced in internal roads of the city. The selected company would be given 10-year time to run these buses.
The sources said the buses would be procured with an aim to promote green fuel energy in consonance of the city’s nature. The work on the project started after the approval of UT Adviser Manoj Parida.
Punjab Governor and UT Administrator VP Singh Badnore had already asked officers to develop Chandigarh as the green city.
An officer said: “Electric buses are zero emission vehicles and safer than traditional buses. These electric buses are already running successfully in foreign countries and trials are going on in some of the Indian cities”.
