Rs 2-cr loan given against fake gold

Yamunanagar, March 7: A jewellery loan fraud of Rs2 crore has come to light in the branch of Axis Bank at Sadhaura town of the district.

The loan was given to 30 customers against gold jewellery between December 2017 and March 2018. However, the pledged jewellery was found to be fake during the bank audit.

On the complaint of Anuj Singla, branch head, Axis bank, a case has been registered against 30 customers and one jeweller, who is on the panel of the bank to certify the purity of gold, under Sections 420, 406 and 120-B of the IPC.

As per the police complaint, the branch of the bank had disbursed loans of Rs1,98,33,156 to 30 persons against gold jewellery. However, when a team of the bank conducted the audit in March 2018, it became suspicious about the quality of the jewellery. On the basis of the audit report, the higher authorities of the bank got the purity of the jewellery checked. It was found to be fake.

Devender Singh, SHO, Sadharua police station, said: “We have issued a notice to the bank, seeking all documents related to the case.”
