The Leh-Manali road is likely to be reopened in the second week of April, Border Roads Organization (BRO) said on Saturday.
An official of BRO said that a snow clearance team is currently working on Leh-Manali road.
Under Project Himank, men and heavy machinery have been put into service to clear snow and make the 400 km road motorable for traffic in summer, he said.
The official said that around 20 feet snow has accumulated along the high altitude. The road had passes as high as 14000 feet.
Heavy snowfall in the mountainous region in winter closes down the highways cutting off the Leh from rest of the world.
Chief Engineer Project Himank Brigadier Nitin K Sharma said that the members of BRO with machinery are working with strenuous efforts to reopen the road.
“Despite sub-zero temperature and high altitude, our men are on the job to reopen the vital road. The weather has played spoil sport in the snow clearance. Every now and then fresh snowfall brings the snow clearance operation back to square one. Despite all that the road will likely be thrown open in the second week of April,” the Chief Engineer said.
