Mohali, March 26: A factory manufacturing cardboard boxes, Sanchit Industries at Phase 8B of the local Industrial Area, was gutted in fire. Goods worth several crores were destroyed. No loss of life was reported. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.
The Fire Department had received a call regarding this around 6.30 am. Two fire tenders were dispatched at the site but by then the entire factory was up in flames. It took around 10 hours to control the flames, said a fire official.
He added that firefighters had a tough time controlling the fire due to the abundance of inflammable material like corrugation rolls and cardboard kept on the premises. The firefighters had to break the premises’ boundary wall during their operation.
The unit manufactured corporate boxes and offset printing cards.
Mohali fire officer KC Sood said the fire tenders had to make several rounds for replenishment. Besides, two water bowsers from Chandigarh and one fire tender from Dera Bassi were also requisitioned. To speed up the firefighting operation, fire tenders were replenished with water from nearby Quark City and Godrej factory.
This was the second major fire incident in the month. On March 15, a major fire had broken out in a thinner manufacturing unit at Phase VII.
