3 held after hour-long gun battle in Mohali

Mohali, March 28: The local police arrested three youths following an exchange of fire at a house in Ballo Majra village in the Balongi area here this evening.

The youths, who are believed to be hardcore criminals, have been identified as Gurpreet Singh, Sukhdeep Kumar and Raman Kumar. The incident occurred around 8.30 pm and the police operation lasted around an hour.

SSP HS Bhullar claimed that after a brief encounter, the police arrested the trio and recovered two pistols, a .12 bore and a .32 bore, along with bullets from their possession.

The accused are said to have fired a few shots before being overpowered by the cops.

SSP Bhullar said the police got a tip-off about the accused, following which police teams were sent to the site. “On seeing the police, the accused opened fire on them. We immediately dispatched more teams there to nab them,” said SSP Bhullar, who also rushed to the spot.

After exchange of some gunshots, the policemen overpowered them.

“The credentials of the accused are being checked. They seem to be hardcore criminals,” said the police.

“We have registered a case under Section 307, 120-B and other appropriate sections of the IPC and the Arms Act against them at the Balongi police station,” said SSP Bhullar, adding that further investigations were on.

According to residents of Ballo Majra village, a couple had been residing as tenants at a house here. “We knew the person as Deepa. Three youths came to his house today in the evening and after some time, policemen turned up there. Then there was an exchange of fire at the spot,” said a resident. However, the police are tight-lipped over the identity of the woman whom Deepa claimed to be his wife.
