New Delhi, April 1: Congress leader Hardik Patel on Monday appealed in Supreme Court against Gujarat High Court’s refusal to stay his conviction in a rioting case.
Gujarat High Court on Friday refused to stay Patidar leader Hardik Patel’s conviction in a riot case, throwing a spanner in the works for the leader who hopes to make his electoral debut in this month’s general elections.
Patel, leader of the Patidar movement for reservations, was sentence to two years of imprisonment in 2018 for rioting and arson in Visnagar town at the height of the 2015 protests for reservation that he spearheaded. This is one of 17 cases he faces in connection with the violent protests.
Representation of People’s Act bars anyone with a prison sentence of two or more years from contesting the elections.
Gujarat votes in a single phase on April 23. April 4 is the last date to file nominations for the state.
