NIRF rankings: PU slips to 34th spot

Chandigarh, April 8:Panjab University has been ranked 34th in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) released by the Ministry of Human Resource Development in the presence of President Ram Nath Kovind in New Delhi today.

With a total score of 51.25 points, the university slipped from 33rd position to 34th spot in last one year.Among all universities of the country, PU bagged the 21st position. Last year, it managed to fall in the league of top 20 universities by scoring 50.94 points, thereby securing the 20th rank. 

The silver lining, however, came from the University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (UIPS), which ranked second among pharmacy institutions in the country. The department bagged 78.10 points, scoring a whooping 88.14 in research and professional practices and boasted of its good reputation with 86.49 perception points. The only area where it lacked was teaching, learning and resources with 71.04 points. 

Except for Patiala’s Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, which scored 55.53 points and ranked 10, no other college or university from Punjab made it to the list of top 15 law colleges in the country. Though Chandigarh owed its cultural heritage to architecture, no college from the city featured on the list of top 15 colleges for the subject. Corbusier’s not inspiring enough now, is he?

Three Punjab, 2 Chandigarh engg institutes among top 100

  • Two Chandigarh-based institutes were ranked among top 100 engineering institutes of the country, while three engineering institutes of Punjab ranked among top 30.
  • Bringing Chandigarh in the top 100 category of engineering institutes, Panjab University has been ranked 54 with a total score of 43.59. Punjab Engineering College University of Technology (PEC) stood at the 78th rank with 38.42 score, whereas last year, the institute stood at 73rd rank with 39.24 score. 
  • With a score of 35.99, Punjab Technical University (PTU) bagged the 96th rank. It scored lowest on perception, but it bagged highest points in teaching, learning and resources.
  • Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology, Patiala, was ranked 23rd with a total of 54.73 points. It bagged maximum points in teaching, learning and resources at 69.51. At the 29th rank with a total score of 52.37, the IIT-Ropar too falls in the league of top 30 engineering institutes. It scored the highest (76.84) in teaching, learning and resources.

PU second in pharmacy, NIPER third

  • Apart from the PU’s University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (UIPS), which raised the bar this year after climbing up from the third to the second position, the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER) bagged the third position with 74.59 points, while Punjabi University scored 54.67 points to bag the 18th rank. 
  • ISF College of Pharmacy, Moga, bagged the 23rd position, while Lovely Professional University, Phagwara, clinched the 27th spot. Chitkara University, Rajpura, was ranked 44th. 

Management

  • Panjab University management departments brought the varsity a score of 44.99 and bagged the 48th rank. While the graduation outcomes (GO) was 74.01, it scored lowest on perception at 15.49 and research and professional practices (RPC) at 18.92 points. Last year, the PU ranked 42nd on the list. 
  • At 64th rank, Chandigarh University bagged a total of 41.86 points. It lost maximum points in RPC (6.21) and perception (2.43). Chitkara University, with a total score of 39.20 ranked at 75th. It, too, lost points in RPC (4.31) and perception (5.83). 

City’s two colleges make it to top 100 

Government Home Science College, Sector 10, scored 51.27 points and secured the 72nd rank, while GGDSD College bagged 49.13 points and slipped to the 99th position. Last year, Postgraduate Government College for Girls bagged the 68th rank and GGDSD College secured the 82th rank.

The parameters include areas such as teaching, learning and resources (TLR), research and professional practices (RPC), graduation outcomes (GO), outreach and inclusivity (OI) and perception.
