New Delhi, April 20: A Muslim prisoner in Tihar Jail, who wasbranded with an ‘Om’(ॐ) symbol on his back, was shifted to another prison a day after the horrific incident took place. On Friday, the prisoner alleged that ‘Om’ symbol has been engraved on his back while he was in judicial custody and lodged in the Tihar Jail. The tattoo was allegedly drawn by a Tihar jail superintendent. Nabbir, a resident of New Seelampuri area of New Delhi, is lodged in the jail in an alleged arms supply case. He was kept in Jail No 4’s high-risk ward and now has been shifted to Jail No 1.
AIG (Prisons) PRO, Raj Kumar informed that after taking cognisance of the matter, the Court had ordered a detailed inquiry & that the prisoner be shifted to a different prison. “An inquiry committee has been constituted, report will be brought before Court. Action will be taken as per further order. Prisoner shifted from jail no 4 to 1”, he added.

According to reports, the matter came to light when Nabbir alias Popa, an alleged arms dealer, was produced before the Karkardooma Court as his judicial custody was ending on Thursday. After the man took off his shirt before the Duty Magistrate Richa Parashar, he showed her the tattooed symbol. He also accused the Tihar Jail authorities of thrashing him and also making this symbol with hot metal and forcing him to fast.
After the incident was reported, the court ordered the Tihar Jail authorities to inquire into the matter and submit a report within 24 hours. The allegations raised by accused are of serious nature and require immediate intervention. Also, a notice was issued to DGP Prisoner to get the medical examination of accused Nabbir be conducted with immediate effect.
The judge ruled saying necessary CCTV footage to be collected and statement of other inmates be also taken in this regard. It is further directed that necessary arrangements be made to ensure the safety of accused in jail.
