Chandigarh, May 27: Punjab Governor and UT Administrator VP Singh Badnore has taken up the issue of damaged pipelines of the Kajauli Phase 5 and 6 water project with the Centre urging it to direct the Railways to replace these soon.
Sources said a letter had been written in this regard as the damaged pipelines had delayed the supply of additional 29 MGD of water to the city.
While all works related to the project have been completed, the damaged pipes have shattered the UT’s plan to get additional water this summer, causing hardship to residents.
The pipelines were laid by the Railways beneath an overbridge. The pipelines leaked during the trial of the additional water supply.
The sources said the Administration had already paid the amount to the Railways. A senior official said the pipelines would have to replaced by the Railways. In the letter, Bandore requested the Centre to direct the Railways to start the work as early as possible so that people in the city did not face water shortage this summer. The MC has already laid the pipelines from Jandpur to the Sector 39 waterworks. The project has already missed two deadlines. It was to be completed by April 30, 2018. Later, the deadline was fixed for October, but the project was delayed further.
Despite the tall claims made by the MC, residents of many sectors are still facing a water crisis these days. As against a demand of 110 MGD, the city is receiving 87 MGD of water. Of this, 68 MGD comes from Kajauli, while the rest is generated through tubewells.
