Chandigarh, June 12:A traffic cop was left injured after a Swift car, which had jumped a red light, dragged him on the bonnet for around 200 meters before speeding away on Wednesday evening.
Constable Vinod Kumar, posted with the traffic wing, was on duty at the Hallo Majra light point when a speeding white Swift heading towards the poultry farm roundabout jumped a red light. Kumar was crossing the road and didn’t get enough time to get out of the way of the car. He showed presence of mind and jumped on the car’s bonnet to save his life.
“I was crossing the road when the car suddenly jumped the red light. Instead of stopping the car, its driver drove towards me and was about to hit me. I jumped onto its bonnet and held on to it to save myself from falling off,” the cop said.
The accused driver, who was accompanied by a girl, didn’t stop the car and kept driving. Sources said the accused drove the car in a zigzag manner, making an attempt to throw the cop off the bonnet. After he was dragged for almost 200 metres, the traffic cop managed to jump off the bonnet.
The accused sped away. The wireless set of the cop fell on the road, which was later handed over to the police by a passerby.
The police control room was informed about the incident.
Meanwhile, the injured cop was rushed to the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32. The cop suffered injuries on his back and the right leg.
The police said the Swift car had a Chandigarh number. “The footage of CCTV cameras installed near the Hallo Majra light point will be scrutinised to identify the car,” said a police official. An investigation into the incident has been initiated at the Mauli Jagran police station.
