Chandigarh, June 28: A 27-year-old youth was murdered in broad daylight at the mini market in Sector 40 this afternoon. The victim was attacked with sharp weapons by youths, believed to be four in number, who escaped from the spot.
The victim has been identified as Amit Katoch, aka Honey, a resident of Sunny Enclave, Kharar.
His family members said Amit had received a call from someone after which he left the house around 11.30 am. Amit reached the mini market adjacent to the temple in his Ford Figo car.
The police said a group of youths carrying sharp weapons repeatedly attacked him, which left the victim seriously injured. They escaped from the spot after the incident.
The police were informed and the victim was rushed to the PGI in a PCR vehicle, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Sources said the victim had injury marks on his legs, hand and head.
UT SSP Nilambari Jagdale visited the murder spot. “We have names of some suspects, which are being verified,” the SSP said.
The police said before succumbing to his injuries, the victim identified one of the suspects as Rajat Tiwari after which a case under Sections 302 (murder) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of a common intention) of the IPC was registered against Tiwari and the others at the Sector 39 police station.
The victim, a graduate from the SGGSC, Sector 26, is survived by his father Onkar Katoch, who is a doctor and runs a clinic in Sector 41, mother Anita, who is a housewife, his twin brother Sumit and two sisters.
Prime suspect at large in another case too
In April this year, prime suspect Rajat Tiwari, along with six others, was booked by the Chandigarh Police for assaulting and kidnapping a Sector 44 resident over old enmity. The victim, Harsh Goyal, was allegedly kidnapped in a car at Sector 34 and was assaulted before being abandoned near the Sector 43/44 light point. He is on the run in the case.
Mother faints on seeing body
The victim’s mother, Anita, who reached the PGI after getting the tragic news, fainted at the hospital after seeing her son’s body.
