New Delhi, July 3: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi made his resignation official on Wednesday, writing a detailed letter to explain his current state of mind and reasons for quitting his position as the party president.

Gandhi said in his letter—which he shared on Twitter—that the powerful in India had the habit of clinging to power, and that Congress could never fight, and win, a deeper ideological battle against opponents without sacrificing the desire for power.

“As president of the Congress Party I am responsible for the loss of the 2019 election. Accountability is critical for the future growth of Congress. It is for this reason that I’ve resigned as Congress President,” his letter said.

“Rebuilding the party will require hard decisions and numerous people will have to be made accountable for the failure of 2019. It would be unjust to hold others accountable but ignore my own responsibility as party president,” Gandhi said in the letter.  “At times I stood completely alone in fight against PM and RSS, and am extremely proud of it,” the letter said.

About the new party president, he said while it was important for someone new to lead the Congress, “it would not be correct for me to select that person”.

Speaking to reporters outside Parliament, Gandhi said he had already resigned as Congress chief and the Congress Working Committee should now meet at the earliest to appoint the new president without any further delay.

“I am nowhere in this process. I have already resigned,” said Gandhi who continues to meet state leaders and recently even met Chief Ministers of the Congress-ruled states raising the debate as to why he’s meeting state delegations if he is not the party president.

Gandhi’s Twitter account still says he is the INC chief.

Gandhi had earlier told party Lok Sabha MPs that he had submitted his resignation to the CWC which now had to start the process of appointing the new president.
