Chandigarh, July 3: Rajat Tiwari (21), prime accused in the murder of Amit Katoch (27), who was stabbed to death in full public view in Sector 40, has been arrested by the UT police.
UT SSP Nilambari Jagdale said a team, led by Inspector Rajdeep Singh, SHO of the Sector 31 police station, and another one led by ASI Parminder Singh of the Sector 39 police station nabbed Tiwari near Tribune Chowk while he was coming to take money from a friend.
The police said Tiwari had fled to Patiala and then to Amritsar after the murder. “Soon after attacking Amit, Tiwari went to Burail and took money from a few friends and left the city,” the SSP said.
The police said Tiwari’s parents were Punjab Government employees and he also had a younger sister. Tiwari will be produced in the court tomorrow. “We will seek his remand as the knife used in the crime is yet to be recovered,” the police said. Two cars, an Activa and a motorcycle used by the suspects have been impounded by the police.
Tiwari wanted people to fear him
Rajat Tiwari, who is pursuing a diploma in electronics and communications from a private college in Kharar, wanted to become a fear factor in the city, especially in southern sectors, including Sector 39, 40 and 41. The police said investigations revealed that Tiwari was forming a group of youths to dominate in the area. “His friend circle included boys who had just stepped into their twenties. The motive was to form a group so that people fear him,” the police said.
Fights on petty issues led to murder
Since both Rajat Tiwari and Amit used to reside in Badheri, Sector 41, they had arguments over small issues, including parking and staring at each other. The fight between neighbourhood boys kept continuing and the hatred kept mounting over the years, which took an ugly turn. “They used to fight and compromise. However, the enmity didn’t end,” said a police official.
