Slain Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani

Jammu, July 8: The Amarnath Yatra was suspended on Monday following a shutdown in Kashmir, that has been called by separatists, on the third death anniversary of slain Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani.

The state administration has suspended the yatra as a precautionary measure. Vehicles carrying pilgrims were not allowed to move towards the Kashmir Valley on Monday.

Wani was killed in an encounter with the security forces on July 8, 2016, which escalated the unrest in Kashmir.  The call to suspend the yatra was taken after the J&K administration sensed violence in Kashmir by the sympathisers of Wani.

It has become a routine for the state administration to suspend the yatra on Wani’s death anniversary.

According to police officials, more than 3,000 pilgrims, who were scheduled to leave for the Valley on Monday, were stranded at the Bhagwati Nagar base camp in Jammu.

Internet services have also been suspended in four south Kashmir districts.
