Arun Jaitley passes away at 66

New Delhi, August 24: Former finance minister Arun Jaitley, who was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, passed away on Saturday following cardiac complications. 

Jaitley, 66, was under observation at the institute’s cardiac-neuro unit.A senior lawyer, Jaitley has been one of the most important ministers during PM Narendra Modi’s first tenure, and often acted as his government’s chief troubleshooter.

Jaitley, who did not contest the Lok Sabha election this time, underwent a renal transplant on May 14 last year. Minister of State for Finance Piyush Goyal had filled in for him at that time. Jaitley stopped attending office since early April 2018 and returned to work at the finance ministry on August 23, 2018.He underwent bariatric surgery in September 2014 to correct the weight he gained because of a long-standing diabetic condition. With agencies
