Chandigarh, August 30: Before jumping the red light or stopping on a zebra crossing, think twice for the UT Administration is all set to implement the amended Motor Vehicles Act from September 1. The UT Transport Department has written to the police to implement the Act, notified by the Government of India on August 28, from September 1.
While the Act has provisions for simplifying the procedure for making a driving licence, it has enhanced the penalty for various traffic offences manifold. The Act has strict provisions for drunken driving and juvenile driving.
According to the amended rules, the parents will be liable for a child’s wrongdoings. If your son or daughter is caught violating traffic norms, you may have to pay a fine of Rs 25,000 and face imprisonment up to three years, besides cancellation of the registration of the vehicle for 12 months. The juvenile will also become ineligible to obtain a learner’s licence until the age of 25. A fine of Rs 10,000 will be imposed for not giving way to emergency vehicles and Rs 10,000 for driving despite disqualification.
Drunken driving may invite imprisonment up to six months and/or a fine up to Rs 10,000 for the first offence and imprisonment up to two years and/or a fine of Rs 15,000 for the second offence.
Ajay Kumar Singla, Secretary, Transport, said the notification issued by the Ministry of Road Transport had been sent to the departments concerned, including the Police, the Registering and Licensing Authority and the State Transport Authority, for implementation from September 1.
