Dharamsala, September 25 Four Himachal Pradesh Police personnel were on Wednesday booked and arrested for extorting money from commuters on the national highway passing through Damtal area on the border of Kangra and Pathankot districts.
According to sources, the four cops were on duty to check drug smuggling on the road on Tuesday night. They stopped a car in which two persons—Ghamsham and Lovely—residents of Dinanagar area of Gurdaspur were travelling.
The cops allegedly threatened to book the duo in a case of narcotics and demanded money from them.They took them to the nearest ATM so that they could withdraw money. However, the ATM did not dispense cash. The cops then took the duo to a petrol pump where they forced them to take out Rs 4,000 from a POS machine. The cops additionally took Rs 5,300 and their mobile phones from the duo.
The car occupants later complained to higher officials of police. The CCTV footage corroborated the allegations of car occupants.
On the orders of Kangra SP Vimukt Ranjan the four cops have been booked under sections 323, 341, 384 and 34 of the IPC.
