Jammu, December 17: Ace sport climber, Shivani Charak has brought laurels for the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir by clinching a bronze medal in speed climbing in the junior women category of the Asian Youth Championship held at Bengaluru on December 15.
After a gripping semifinal loss to her Japanese counterpart after she had an unfortunate slip during her climb, Shivani made strong comeback to beat another climber from Japan to bag the bronze medal. With that, Shivani became the first sport climber from J&K to win a medal in international sport climbing competition.
Earlier in the lead climbing competition, Shivani narrowly missed the bronze medal. Even in bouldering too, Shivani had entered the final round but could secure only fifth position in this continental championship.
Eighteen-year old Shivani has bagged over 20 medals in various national competitions during the last four years and is currently number 1 ranked sport climber of the country in the women’s category.
Meanwhile, Shivani along with other climbers Ajay Deep and Arun Deep Singh have left for Jamshedpur to participate in Tata Steel International Climbing Championship to be held from December 20 to 22. Meanwhile, office-bearers of the Mountaineering Association of J&K and Tawi Trekkers have congratulated Shivani Charak for her stupendous feat.
