Raj Bala Malik elected mayor of Chandigarh

Chandigarh, January 10: Councillor Raj Bala Malik was on Friday elected the 24th mayor of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation.

Ruling BJP’s Malik beat Congress’s Gurbax Rawat through a secret ballot in the MC House. 

The mayor has been elected for one-year tenure.

There are total 27 votes–26 councillors and one by ex-officio member, BJP’s Kirron Kher.

Malik was first elected councillor in the MC House in 2011 and became mayor the very next year as the Congress candidate.

In 2016, she shifted to the BJP. A lawyer herself, she is married to RK Malik, a senior advocate in the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
