New Delhi, February 13: The Supreme Court on Thursday directed political parties to upload on their website details of pending criminal cases against candidates contesting polls.

The court said political parties would have to specify reasons for selecting candidates having pending criminal cases against them on their website.

It said political parties would publish details of pending criminal cases against candidates on social media platforms and newspapers.

Political parties would submit report of compliance to the Election Commission within 74 hours of selecting candidates with pending criminal cases, the court said.

If the parties failed to comply with its directions on candidates with pending criminal cases, the EC would bring it to notice of the apex court, the apex court said.

The court said there had been an alarming increase in criminalisation of politics in the last four general elections. PTI
